The Mini Miette: A sweet but stylish self-soothing lovie

The Mini Miette: A sweet but stylish self-soothing lovie
With all the little lovie blankets out there I love seeing something that stands out and grabs my attention - and hopefully the attention of my little one. Petite Meiette’s Mini Miette did just that! It is the sweetest of little bunny lovies with its playful, brightly colored bunny head complete with floppy ears. And this little bunny has a just-as-colorful attached fleece blanket. Consider it the sweet-yet-stylish self-soother!

The softness of the Mini Miette should make it a great companion to comfort your baby at naptime and playtime. Petite Miette’s Mini Miettes use organic cotton fleece and are stuffed with organic cotton batting. The eyes and nose are embroidered on securely so you needn’t worry when the Mini Miette becomes your child’s favorite chew toy! The Mini Miette bunnies come in three color combinations: citrus patchwork (sky, raspberry, and citron); berry patchwork (blueberry, kiwi, and clementine); and natural.

You can purchase a Mini Miette for your Mini Me for $24 from PetiteMiette.com. - Emily H.

The Zaky: A helping “hand” for baby’s sleep

The Zaky: A helping “hand” for baby’s sleep
The Zaky is a sleep positioner rather new to the baby market. This award-winning and therapeutic positioner is made to mimic the comforting touch of mom or dad while baby sleeps. The Zaky is basically a hand shaped micro fleece pillow. Instructions tell parents to sleep with this pillow for a few nights so that their scent remains. The pillow can also be heated in the dryer for a few minutes to feel like body heat. The combination of scent, warmth, and surrounding comfort creates a restful environment in which baby can sleep. Many new parents will attest that their baby sleeps better while being held, and the Zaky appears to recreate that feeling astoundingly well.

The Zaky is fully machine washable and, since it is made of breathable micro fleece, won't overheat baby in the summer but will help baby stay warm in the winter. It's currently on sale on Amazon - it normally retails for $68 but is marked 48% off for $35. If you purchase two, you can receive an extra 5% off each Zaky by entering the code LFFRRRHM at checkout. - Jenn

Two free ways to help a congested baby

Two free ways to help a congested baby
Cold and flu season is here, and you really shouldn't give your baby a flu or cough medication for kids. The brutally short story for why the authorities have pulled these off the shelf for babies is two basic things - they don’t work, and (very rarely) they kill babies from bad reactions. Enough said.

So what are you gonna do for your miserable congested baby? For one thing, taking the baby into the shower with you is a wonderful tool. The hot water, steam and warmth really help loosen up the nasal passages. If you are not used to doing this, it works better if one person gets in the shower, and the other person hands in and out the naked baby. If you can breast or bottle-feed the baby in a warm bath with you, even better. At the apex of my kid’s most recent cold, I dragged a kitchen chair into the bathroom and after the shower and bath were done, I fed him sitting there in the steam while we were both wrapped in warm towels. It really helped him breathe, which in turn helped him eat, and thus helped him sleep. What a relief for us all!

Another easy idea is to elevate the head side of the mattress in your crib or co-sleeper. The safest way to do this is to place some books (phone books or text books are easiest) under one end of the mattress, between the mattress and the wooden platform that supports it. It works just as well as a "crib wedge" but costs nothing. A few inches (3 or 4, tops) will help the baby breathe and aids in sinus drainage. Just don’t space out in the middle of the night and put the kid down with their head on the wrong side - a very grumpy baby will be the certain result. - Leigh G.

“Good Night, Sleep Tight” helps make great sleepers

“Good Night, Sleep Tight” helps make great sleepers
One of my biggest worries as the parent of a newborn is getting that baby to sleep. Luckily, I found the book Good Night, Sleep Tight: The Sleep Lady’s Gentle Guide to Helping Your Child Go to Sleep, Stay Asleep, and Wake Up Happy. The book is a fantastic resource for information about the physiology of sleep and children’s sleep needs from birth through age five. It addresses how to shape sleep for children and issues that may arise at different ages. The book even talks about improving sleep for those choosing to co-sleep.

This is a book that I have found myself looking to for information about my children's sleep habits many times over the last two and a half years. I have been able find how much sleep my children should actually be getting at each age as well as example schedules for that time. I have learned about taking away pacifiers, addressing sleep issues with teething, and how adding a new sibling can cause new sleep problems to arise, even in previously strong sleepers. Now, I am revisiting much of the book as I try to get my seven-week-old on a schedule and into a bed in his own room. I have gotten so much advice and support from this book that it is now my go-to gift for new parents.

Kim West, one of the book’s authors, is known as the Sleep Lady. She coaches parents to help them guide their children to be great sleepers. You can find out more about Kim and her philosophy at SleepLady.com. - Sara I.

Homemade Sun Jars

Homemade Sun Jars
With all the discussion about having a safe light in baby's room, I discovered these sun jars, which use a solar powered LED light. Keep them by a window during the day and you'll have a great low-light source for the night that you don't have to worry about turning off. I found a tutorial on Instructables and I am curious to try this out and see how it works/how long the light would last. I heard that upgrading to a high powered battery will give you a stronger light that will last longer.

You can usually find a solar garden light at your neighborhood home improvement store, or I found a package of 6 selling for $16.67 on Amazon.com. I've also read that some people added glass pebbles or rock to the jar to create a different effect. I'll keep my eye out for other baby night light ideas and pass them on as I find them! - Trisha
