The iPhone app for newborn parents

The iPhone app for newborn parents
And I’m not talking about that app that lets your little ones “color” all over your iPhone screen with the touch of their finger. What I am talking about is Baby Brain, a new iPhone app that helps parents of newborns track feedings, diaper changes and even sleep schedules.

You thought light sabers were cool… try having someone - or something - remember the last time you nursed your baby or how long her last stretch of sleep was so you don’t have to. This is a really great option for sleep-deprived parents who have a hard time remembering to shower! Baby Brain, like most iPhone apps, is easy to use; simply tap and track. You can quickly see when your baby’s last bottle was and just how much she ate. Baby Brain keeps logs, which you can easily view even months down the road.

What I love best about this app is it makes those newborn check-ups a lot less stressful for new parents. All the info the doctor needs is literally at your fingertips. You can even email reports to your doctors and caregivers. And get this, it has a breastfeeding timer that runs while you hop online or catch your latest TiVo’d show!

You can purchase the Baby Brain iPhone app for $5 from the iPhone store or directly from iTunes. I’m game for anything that helps keep a new parent sane, and at $5 it’s a sound investment in today’s economy! - Emily H.

Win a Philips Avent Digital Screen, interference-free Baby Monitor

Win a Philips Avent Digital Screen, interference-free Baby Monitor
One impressive gadget making its debut this season is an update to what was already an exciting product: Philips' Interference-Free baby monitor, which continuously scans wireless channels to access the clearest signal and ensure that your baby monitor isn't getting interference from other signals in your home or outside of it. Philips leveraged technology used in other devices to make baby monitors better at a time when the proliferation of wireless signals in the home threatened to drive parents nuts trying to find a monitor with an "A" or "B" frequency choice that didn't interfere with other devices in the home and make their baby monitor sound like a cheap ham radio.

The new version of the monitor is far more affordable than the models offered in its previous version - about half the cost of the eyebrow-raising $300 and $200 version Philips debuted in 2006 - and the sleek redesign stands as one of the first significant achievements of Philips' partnership with leading infant products brand Avent, which it purchased in 2006. In addition to the DECT (digital enhanced cordless telecommunication) technology that scans over 100 channels and switches seamlessly at the slightest signs of interference, the deluxe version of this monitor features a temperature sensor on the baby's side and a display on the parent unit, as well as a communication interface that allows parents to play lullabies or (try to) verbally soothe restless infants remotely. Some of these features are carried over into the basic version of the device as well.

The new monitors will be available in late October, but Amazon.com is accepting orders that will ship out on or around Oct. 21, in both the new full-featured version, which sells for about $150, and its parallel basic model, which sells for around $110. Sounds like a great Christmas present for new parents!
