Earth Day is just around the corner (Wednesday!), and there's no reason to leave our littlest planet-dwellers out of the discussion. I firmly believe it’s never too early to start teaching children about nature and the world around them. But how do you do that with an infant who is more interested in splashing water than conserving it?
Innovative Kids has a wonderful board book collection called
Green Start that features four books with thick recycled cardboard pages ,all related to nature. One of the books,
One Tree, tells the story of a single tree growing in a meadow, and at first glance this little tree appears very lonely. As you flip the pages your child will discover this tree is really the center of life for a variety of animals. From its insect-nibbled leaves to sheltering branches, the little tree is anything but lonely. It is a little world for a lot of little creatures! You and your child will learn how many living things depend on this small-but-oh-so-important tree throughout the year.
Green Start’s
One Tree is a wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day with your little one. The other books in the collection include
Baby Animals,
In the Garden and
The Five Senses. You can purchase
One Tree and any other books in the Green Start collection for $7 each from
Amazon.com. That’s a great price for a little infant-friendly (i.e., board book), “all-natural” education!

With Easter around the corner and springtime in the air Barney Saltzberg’s
Good Egg would make the perfect addition to your board book collection. Saltzberg is the author of over 30 children’s books including the series
Touch and Feel Kisses. His latest book is sure to please even the most discerning board book aficionado.
Good Egg is an interactive board book (the best kind!) with flaps, tabs and even a little wiggling and waggling. The main character is Egg, whose simple design does not have a whole lot of detail but does have an irresistibly cute personality. While flipping through the eight board book pages your little one will tell Egg to do things like sit and roll over, but when it comes time to tell Egg to sit, a surprise is in store!
In
Good Egg, sentences are no longer than two words, which makes it a wonderful book for babies who’ve just discovered lift-the-flap fun. My daughter would have loved this book when she was one, and even at 20 months this would make the perfect surprise in her Easter basket. Nothing like a simple, engaging story about a good egg on Easter Sunday!
You can purchase Barney Saltzberg’s
Good Egg for $10 from
Amazon.com.

Today's inauguration of a new president is a momentous day in our nation's history. Why not remember the day with a special book for baby?
Yes We Can! A Salute To Children From President Obama's Victory Speech is an inspirational picture book for children. The text, as the title implies, is from President Obama's election night victory speech, and the words are complimented with photographs of children from across the country and Obama on the campaign trail. This book, available for just $4.99 from both
Amazon and
Scholastic, is a perfect keepsake of such a big day.
Looking for a book that is a little less specific to this year's inauguration? There are a lot of other great choices out there. Some of my favorites are
Duck for President by Doreen Cronin,
If I Ran for President by Catherine Stier, and
If These Walls Could Talk: Family Life at the White House by Jane O'Connor.
Happy Inauguration Day reading!

One of my favorite activities to do with young children is read a book, and even infants can get in on the fun if you pick one that truly engages the senses. My three-month-old and I have been loving the classic story
Pat the Bunny. The interactive pages with different tactile experiences (pat the bunny, put a finger in mommy's ring, etc.) are as engaging for my little one as they have been for millions of children since the book's original publishing in 1940. More importantly than the things my baby is learning from the experiences in the book, we are getting time to bond and cuddle together, which is a precious commodity.
Pat the Bunny, along with its sister books
Pat the Cat and
Pat the Puppy, are all available from Amazon. Right now, the site has a special on the
Pat the Bunny gift set that includes the book and a plush bunny for only $11.55, more than 30% off.
