A new way to browse baby names

A new way to browse baby names
Looking for a new way to drill down into a bunch of baby names to find the perfect name for your baby on the way? Try What A Lovely Name - it's fast, refreshingly simple, and offers four ways to dig - by "tradition" (cultural), celebrity type, fictional universe, or, most usefully, disposition, using a tagging system to provide baby name recommendations based on character traits associated with them.

Granted, neither our daughter's first name nor her middle name are in their database, so there's really no clear indication of how many names are in this database, compared with the ever-fascinating Baby Name Voyager or the many other directories out there - but speaking as someone who went through dozens of books and other sources to find the names we finally settled on, a new way of browsing is far more valuable than just another list of names, however large. You can check out What A Lovely Name yourself here. [Via] - Jeremiah

Thanks for the playful tips on choosing a name, which can seem so stressful. Trust me--we changed our sons name when he was a month old because his name didn’t “fit” him! However, try to enjoy the process, make a list of a bunch of names and select the right one at the hospital.

I like the idea of the disposition search.  I hope this site is a work in progress with more names to be added, though-- right now most of the names seem to be, er, WEIRD.  Perhaps they’re primarily from different cultural traditions than mine, but it definitely limits the site’s usefulness for those of us who prefer more tradtional names and whose heritage is from English-speaking countries.  Perhaps the “tradition” and disposition searches could be combined at some point…
