Getting to the bottom of baby skin irritations

Getting to the bottom of baby skin irritations
Although parents wish it were otherwise, newborns can experience a variety of skin irritations during their first year. This can include everything from eczema to cradle cap, infant acne to diaper rash. WebMD has a slideshow explaining common infant skin ailments, as well as how to treat and prevent them. It is a great resource for both new and experienced parents for both the information it includes and the detailed, close-up pictures of each skin condition. Check out the slideshow, titled Baby Skin Care: Simple Tips to Keep Baby's Skin Healthy, for more information. As the content is funded by a disposable diaper company (Pampers) you might notice the absence of any mention of diaper rash being much higher among children who wear disposable diapers, but the slideshow covers a variety of skin conditions and is very helpful in other areas.

Make sure you consult your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby's skin health.

One additional source of significant skin irritation in recent months is tagless infant clothing, an issue Z Recommends has been reporting on since early September. (You can read their latest reporting on this story here, which features dozens of reader reports in the comments; dozens more are here, in their first post on the subject.) Onesies and other items of infant clothing with ink labels on the inside of the garments' neck have been causing serious reactions among some infants, ranging from rashes to open wounds, that heal only when use of the clothing is discontinued. This step is often delayed by an unfamiliarity with the cause of the irritation, as many consumers report incomplete diagnoses by pediatricians as eczema and treatment with topical medication, while the rash will only truly subside when they are no longer exposed to the inks.

Several brands have been named, but the one that has come up the most is Carter's. The company is currently accepting returns of any tagless infant clothing that causes your child irritation. You can reach Carter's at 888-782-9548. - Sara I.

Ah...the wonderful world of eczema.  Actually, the fact that our boy wears disposable diapers helped us finger one of the culprits - fabric softener.  He had a nice rash everywhere except in the perfect shape of a diaper, then a distinct line at his wrists and neck.  Since then, its been a long lasting battle against the rash - I get very frustrated with eczema only because I’ve had it since birth myself, there is no cure for it (what the he!! do I have to do to convince my MIL of this?  She thinks I should give him a bath in extremely dilute bleach because she saw it on TV.  Yes, that is an accepted treatment for extremely infected areas of eczema, but that’s to kill off the infection...and it doesn’t work if chlorine worsens the eczema, which it does in MY case so there’s no way I’m going to attempt this with our son, and I really hope to avoid the situation by not allowing it to get infected in the first place!) and I know that this stuff ITCHES worse than poison ivy!
We deep-sixed any lotions or product that had mineral oil and use Dove or glycerine soap on him, and swear by Burt’s Bees Buttermilk and Weleda Calendula.  Come to think of it, that’s the best remedy for Mommy’s skin too, though I do not put the Calendula on a red flared up rash (it itches and burns - that can’t be good!).  Witch hazel and real aloe vera help immensely as well :-).
