The basics: How to sew a seam

Do you have a sewing machine, but really aren't sure what to do with it?

Here's a quick tutorial for you about how to sew a seam, something you will use in pretty much everything you sew.

Place the fabric with "right sides" facing each other. "Right sides" are the sides of the fabric you want facing out when you're done.

Pin along the edge you want to sew.

Place under the foot of the sewing machine, and lower the foot. Then begin to sew a straight line, removing the pins as you go. Be careful not to sew over a pin, as it can break your needle and damage your machine. Make sure you backstitch (sew in reverse) at the beginning and end of your seam, as this prevents the seam from coming undone.

Here is what it looks like when you are done.
I used a bright pink thread so it would be easy to see.

Now turn it over, and you have a nice clean seam!

Thank you so much for this helpful tip!  I was wondering if you can also give us a tip on how to hem jeans or pants?  I am 5’1” tall and I always have a problem with the length when shopping for pants.  I would really love to learn on how to do this myself especially since I have a sewing that I have only used twice:( Thank you!  Appreciate it!
