The Premaxx baby carrier

We liked the idea of the Premaxx Baby Carrier, but with a couple of very cozy exceptions where Z slept through parties in its hammock-like shell while a very young infant, she rarely tolerated it and was eager to get out. Each of these carriers represents a different strategy for having your child hang off your body, and this one didn't work so well with us. The bag is very well-constructed and nice-looking, though, so if it seems like your style, a baby who prefers being constrained (and many young infants do) might do very well in this carrier. But then, with very small babies, it feels like the bag does not offer enough support or protection. Maybe we just couldn't figure out how to use it - but that's a problem too, isn't it? The verdict: A well-made, fashionable, and impractical carrier. - Jennifer

I would highly caution your readers NOT to purchase the Premaxx or any similar “bag sling” like the Infantino Sling Rider, Lamaze, or similar.

The design of this carrier is inherently risky and unsafe for the baby. It poses a potential danger of positional asphyxiation, i.e. suffocation, for newborns and small babies. The carrier requires that baby be placed in a lying-down position, which tucks baby’s chin to chest. Because baby’s airway is as small as a drinking straw and newborns don’t have the muscle strength to lift their heads up by themselves, and because the material of the sling closes over baby’s head, there is a real risk of suffocation.
