Soft and sensible: The Medela Nursing Camisole

Soft and sensible: The Medela Nursing Camisole
As a nursing mom, I am always looking for ways to make nursing easier, especially in public. However, I had never really seen any use for a nursing tank. Why would you want yet another layer of clothes? After an opportunity to give the Medela Nursing Camisole a try, I have changed my tune.

At first glance, the Medela Nursing Camisole seems like any other nursing tank, and in many ways it is. The top folds down from each side, just like a nursing bra, to make nursing easier. However, this tank has a few bonus features, including its cotton/bamboo fabric - a fabric which is breathable, moisture-absorbent, and has antibacterial properties. The tank is easily compatible with the Medela Freestyle breastpump, which I reviewed here, making it a convenient addition to any Freestyle user’s wardrobe.

The tank also has an additional layer of fabric over the bust area, which Medela says is put there "for modesty and elevated support," and it does a fairly good job. No need to wear a bra with this tank. Let’s face it, any nursing tank is not going to do the job of a split cup nursing bra, but that isn’t really the appeal of these garments.

So, what makes me so excited about the nursing tank? Its length. As a non-celebrity postpartum mom, my tummy is nowhere near its original form. When I am out and need to nurse in public, I am more embarrassed about flashing midriff than anything else. Even when using my nursing cover, tummy makes its way out into the public eye. When I tried wearing the Medela cami under my shirt instead of just a nursing bra, my fears were assuaged, and passing strangers were spared the sight of my tummy.

The fit of the tank is really great. It is a couple inches longer than the waist of my pants, long enough to more than cover all of my abdomen when sitting down, which is a definite selling point. The fabric also fits nicely, hanging loosely in all the places it should.

A few things could be improved on the cami. For one thing, I wish there were additional color choices besides the black and white. Even just the addition of gray and ivory would be welcome. Also, I would love to see Medela publicize a sizing chart for the nursing camisole to help consumers order the correct size. Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large are often difficult to discern for nursing moms whose bust measurements are not usually at their normal size. I ordered at what I guessed was my post-pregnancy size and ended up okay.

Overall, the Medela Nursing Camisole is a great addition to any nursing mom’s wardrobe. You can find it at Amazon and other outlets for about $45. - Sara I.
