The Baby Bjorn infant carrier

The Baby Bjorn was the first carrier we used in our house. Z pretty much demanded to be carried around all the time when she was tiny so the Bjorn was used by mom, dad, and all the grandparents. It worked very well for Jeremiah when Z was very small, and can be worn with the child facing forwards or backwards on your chest - the former to allow the baby access to whatever you're doing (careful by that stove!) and the latter for the wonderful experience of having baby sleep snuggled up against your chest. (Enjoy that while it lasts - it won't be long...) The verdict: A well-made, comfortable carrier for babies in the 8-18 lb. range; although it can hold babies up to 22 lb., you'll notice discomfort for both baby and caregiver near the upper end of that range. - Jennifer

Honestly, while the Bjorn used to be the only game in town, there are so many more comfortable--and just plain cuter--options out there now, that will work from birth to toddler. http://www.thebabywearer.com is the “zrecs” equivalent in the babywearing world.  They have all kinds of detailed reviews, of both carriers and vendors, and all the information you can absorb.  There are so many great buckle carriers now:  Ergo, TenToes Clicks, AngelPacks, Beco....

@Nancy,

We just returned from a trade show featuring literally dozens of brands, many of which will be reviewed on Polliwogged in the next several months - including not only a lot of startups and sling companies but some nice new options from Baby Bjorn! Any recommendations are welcome!

I wore my baby birth-35 lbs, and we live in a big city and never really used a stroller.  For people who want bombproof but pretty carriers that are extraordinarily comfortable, check these out:
Scootababy hip carrier (knocks the pants off the hip carriers available at chain stores):
http://www.scootababy.com/buy.php
and the Beco Butterfly II, which has a removable infant insert and can be used for front or back carries, even for smaller babies:  http://www.becobabycarrier.com/
