The iPhone app for newborn parents

The iPhone app for newborn parents
And I’m not talking about that app that lets your little ones “color” all over your iPhone screen with the touch of their finger. What I am talking about is Baby Brain, a new iPhone app that helps parents of newborns track feedings, diaper changes and even sleep schedules.

You thought light sabers were cool… try having someone - or something - remember the last time you nursed your baby or how long her last stretch of sleep was so you don’t have to. This is a really great option for sleep-deprived parents who have a hard time remembering to shower! Baby Brain, like most iPhone apps, is easy to use; simply tap and track. You can quickly see when your baby’s last bottle was and just how much she ate. Baby Brain keeps logs, which you can easily view even months down the road.

What I love best about this app is it makes those newborn check-ups a lot less stressful for new parents. All the info the doctor needs is literally at your fingertips. You can even email reports to your doctors and caregivers. And get this, it has a breastfeeding timer that runs while you hop online or catch your latest TiVo’d show!

You can purchase the Baby Brain iPhone app for $5 from the iPhone store or directly from iTunes. I’m game for anything that helps keep a new parent sane, and at $5 it’s a sound investment in today’s economy! - Emily H.

Thank you so much for the fantastic post on our iPhone app! We are honored to be featured on Polliwogged.

My husband and I are parents of two (son - eight months and daughter - two years) and we are very committed to making this the best app available for parents. We’re constantly updating the app, and are working on some very cool new features to be released later this summer.

I’d love to hear any feedback, suggestions, or ideas for the app—we’re listening very closely to parents!

My email is:

I’d love to hear from you. Thanks again!

Jackie

I was just browsing the BabyBrain website and was shocked to discover they are sponsoring a disgusting contest that is insulting to families and the fathers that help support them.

My husband is an integral part of our family and is most certainly not clueless.

What kind of wife and mother would refer to their spouse that way?  After all she is the one who picked him to father their children.

I certainly won’t be buying this app.

Reprehensible!

Thank you so much for your comment - I really appreciate your feedback.

I am so sorry that you found the contest offensive. It was certainly not meant to offend families of any kind. I’m so sorry if it came across that way!

My husband is a brilliant father, and we share family responsibilities 50/50. We were certainly not trying to undermine his skills as parent or as a husband, or those of any other father or husband.

Like many parents, I think, we find parenting joyous and rewarding—but also little bit hectic and quite funny at times too. : ) Our intention was just to find a little bit of humor among the diaper-changing and feeding chaos that comes with raising little ones.

Again, we are parents of two and we strongly believe that mothers, fathers, family members, and friends everywhere are doing the most incredible job imaginable: raising a child. We certainly did not mean any harm or offense.

Please accept our sincerest apologies!

Best,

Jackie and Jay Ashton

I would have to agree with Gloria here.  I’m a father, and I am certainly not clueless.

I appreciate the low cost of this and the fact that it runs on something many people already own.  The purpose-built devices that do this can easily turn out to be a big waste of money for those of us whose babies don’t “schedule” well.  My daughter’s approach to “scheduling” was to set her own pattern, wait until I started to catch on and think I could predict things, and then change everything again!  The idea of waking a baby up because it was “time” to feed them and keep them on a predictable schedule worked great for my sleep-loving nephews, but turned out to be ludicrous at my house.

How about change the baby’s diaper when it is dirty and feed them when they are hungry?  A tiny baby needs to eat very frequently to grow, and if you leave them in a nasty dirty diaper they will get a rash.  Yuck.  A breastfeeding timer?? What the heck. It sounds like someone needs to do some more research because that whole “ten minutes on each side” thing has already been dubunked as merely an observational study.  Every baby (and every mother’s breasts functionality) is different.

A new parent has enough to do taking care of the baby and themselves to not need to make themselves crazy trying to write down every thing in a iPhone.

Watch your baby, not the clock!

Thanks for the feedback, Marija. Certainly understand that our app is not for everyone. We are parents too, and we strongly believe that there are no better parenting tools than your own instincts coupled with lots of love and attention. Baby Brain is not designed to deliver a particular parenting style. Only you know what is best for your baby!

Baby Brain is simply a very convenient way to record, tally or share information about your child. (Only takes a few seconds.)

Regardless of parenting style, we’ve found that most parents do jot things down (and are also quite forgetful in those early weeks!) We’ve also heard from parents that they like to share this information (with babysitters, doctors, or spouses.) Or quickly view what the baby did in previous days, weeks, or months.

Parents are also currently using Baby Brain to record important information like: temperatures, medicines given, reactions to new foods, etc.

For us, as parents of an eight month old and two year old, Baby Brain has been extremely helpful as a convenient recording and sharing tool.
