Drink to a pregnant glow!

Drink to a pregnant glow!
Getting the best nutrition during pregnancy is a top priority for expectant moms, but getting the best isn’t always easy, especially if you’re not big into fruits and vegetables. (Okay, that would be me...) But if you’re big into refreshing beverages, you’re in luck!

Glow Mama, a drink created "for and by new moms and moms-to-be," is a low-calorie beverage free of artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors, and preservatives. So what does it have? Glow Mama is packed with essential vitamins, minerals and fiber all disguised by the light, refreshing taste of kiwi. Did you know one kiwi offers twice the vitamin C of an orange, twice the vitamin E of an avocado, and 20% more potassium than a banana? It is also a good source of calcium, iron, folic acid and fiber. (The kiwifruit juice concentrate is imported directly from New Zealand.)

Endorsed by the American Pregnancy Association, Glow Mama is a tasty way to stay hydrated, healthy and energized during and after pregnancy. You can purchase 24 (12-ounce) bottles for $45 from Amazon.com, or go all-out and get a full trimester's worth - sixteen bottles delivered to your door every two weeks for three months - for around $150 from GlowMama's online shop. - Emily H.

American Academy of Pediatrics releases new Vitamin D guidelines

American Academy of Pediatrics releases new Vitamin D guidelines
I have never heard so much about Vitamin D as I have over the last two weeks.

Vitamin D was never mentioned to me when my twins were born at the end of 2005. Last week our pediatrician recommended we give our exclusively-breastfed newborn a vitamin supplement every day to insure he gets an adequate amount. She told us that due to lack of Vitamin D in maternal diets and the recommendations to keep infants out of the sun, the incidence of rickets has risen, and the supplements help to prevent the disease.

Today, the American Academy of Pediatrics doubled previous recommendations, advising that all children receive at least 400 international units of Vitamin D per day. This is roughly the amount found in a quart of fortified milk. Exclusively breastfed infants, as well as children who have a lower Vitamin D intake, are advised by the AAP to take a supplement. You can read the news release on the American Academy of Pediatrics website here.

According to the article, rickets is not the only disease that a Vitamin D supplement can address:

Adequate vitamin D throughout childhood may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. In adults, new evidence suggests that vitamin D plays a role in the immune system and may help prevent infections, autoimmune diseases, cancer and diabetes.

If you are a parent of young children or currently expecting, these new recommendations may be something you want to discuss with your health care provider. - Sara I.

A better way to combat morning sickness

A better way to combat morning sickness
I know I sound like my mother when I say this, but why didn’t they have as many nausea-fighting products when I was pregnant as they do now? From ginger elixirs to pregnancy pops, there’s a war on prenatal nausea. Fortunately, the products are winning.

The latest in the lineup is the Psi band, an FDA-cleared, drug-free wristband that helps relieve nausea, including that due to morning sickness ( as well as that caused by motion sickness, chemotherapy and anesthesia). Psi Bands are not only drug-free but also adjustable, waterproof, reusable and definitely more fashionable than your typical air-sickness bag.

The bands work using wrist acupressure, the ancient healing art whereby pressure is applied to specific points on the body to provide comfort and alleviate various symptoms. The pressure helps stimulate the body's natural ability to self-heal. Skeptical? Scientific studies actually support the use of wrist acupressure in the relief of nausea, and the research includes studies performed specifically in treating morning sickness.

To wear Psi bands simply place a band on each wrist, adjust the size, and then change the pressure by rotating the small dial. Where was that dial when I was pregnant with children number one, two, three and four? The adjustable nature of Psi bands will make them more comfortable for far more women than standard-issue pressure-point wristbands, which place more pressure on larger wrists because their grip is from a simple elastic band.

One pair of Psi bands? $16 on Amazon.com. Relief from nausea? Priceless. - Emily H.

The (ginger) ale for what ails you

The (ginger) ale for what ails you
If you’re one of the unfortunate many who suffer from nausea during pregnancy, I totally relate. I tried chamomile tea, ginger supplements, magnetic bracelets and a few remedies I can’t recall. One thing I didn’t get to try was the new Ginger Ale Elixir from Oh Mama! (And no, I'm not considering getting pregnant again just to try it...)

Oh Mama! Ginger Ale Elixir helps fight the symptoms of morning sickness while soothing the stomach for the duration of your pregnancy. Infused with the nausea-calming ingredients of ginger, lemon and Vitamin B6, this little beverage is also fortified with 100% RDA of folic acid so you can have a healthy, nausea-free pregnancy. What I love most is Oh Mama!’s Ginger Ale Elixir actually contains ginger. If you check the label on that “other” ginger ale I’m pretty sure you won’t find ginger listed as an ingredient.

Oh Mama! Ginger Ale Elixir was designed with the help of leading morning sickness and perinatal nutrition specialists and contains no preservatives. You can buy a case of 24 for around $40 online at Amazon.com. Trust me when I saw a nausea-free pregnancy is so worth the investment! - Emily H.

A tablet full of ginger juice helps the prenatal go down

I have been a fan of Rainbow Light vitamins for years so it only made sense to stick with their line throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. All of their products are sugar, wheat, gluten, lactose, and yeast free while being 100% vegan. Their prenatals go above and beyond just your average RDA of folic acid, iron and such - they also include fresh ginger juice, which is incredibly helpful at curbing the periods of morning sickness (or all day sickness). Rainbow Light Just Once Prenatal One Multivitamin Tablets are currently on sale at Amazon. A 150 count bottle will run you $19, which is 56% off of the average price.

The BabyCenter Store is running a promo right now for free shipping on orders over $25 when using the code SHOPPING. They also have the Medela Comfort Maternity/Nursing bra 20% off for $28. This is a great, stretchy, breathable bra that keeps nursing pads in place, is seamless to not show through clothing, and is comfortable enough to sleep in. What more could you ask for?

Target also has a free shipping deal until 9/13 when you spend $50 or more on baby gear and bedding. Target has many of the BornFree items on sale ... like a 2 pack of the BornFree Wide-Neck 9 oz. bottles. They are currently $20 which is 13% off. The entire BornFree line is BPA free. Bottles and trainer cups include an anti-vacuum valve which allows air to flow more freely, reducing the chance of nipple collapse and even middle ear infections. Good stuff! - Jenn
